aRE YOU PRIMED BY TV ADS?

This section will briefly focus on how priming affects our eating behaviors. A major way we see priming affect our eating behaviors is through the use of television advertisements. In a study primarily conducted by Jennifer L. Harris (2009), elementary-school-age children watched a cartoon that contained either food advertising or advertising for other products and received a snack while watching. The study showed that children who were exposed to food advertising consumed 45 % more foods. Researchers have concluded that food advertising to children and people in general leads to greater preferences and purchase of the products advertised, and creates behavioral priming which causes changes in eating behaviors of the individuals. As one can imagine, this is a big problem for the obese population and those who are trying to live a healthier lifestyle.
